Description
PRICE REDUCED - OYSTER 56 ASTAHAYA
The 56 is Oyster’s most popular model ever, seventy-five were launched between 1998 and 2010, and it is arguably the quintessential Oyster design. During this time the 56 was the undisputed class leader and did more than any other design to establish the 56-59’ (17-18m) size range as perhaps the ideal for owners without crew; large and spacious enough for rapid ocean cruising and to accommodate her crew in safety, comfort and style when living aboard, but also compact enough to be handled by a couple.
The 56 was the first Oyster design to be drawn for us by Rob Humphreys, beginning a partnership that continues to this day, and he certainly got it right first time. The 56 retained earlier successful Oyster design features; the single skin hull construction with stiffness provided by massive ribs and stringers, keel-stepped mast, and the full-length rudder skeg protecting the entire rudder. The 56 was the first yacht to benefit from an ergonomically designed cockpit, designed in conjunction with Loughborough University, creating a space which makes relaxing and entertaining a true pleasure, whilst maintaining all the essential qualities you would expect of a serious ocean-going yacht.
The 56 is a proven performer, with many ocean crossings and circumnavigations to her credit. She has had class wins in the ARC and has also won Cruising Class 1 at Antigua Sailing Week, beating a number of more serious racing yachts. She is a superb sea boat and very highly regarded by all her fortunate owners and all those who have sailed on her.
Astahaya is Oyster 56 hull number 62 and was launched in 2008, and benefits from the g5 styling of the younger 56s, which gives the attractive sweeping profile to the deck saloon which is characteristic of our subsequent designs. She is still in her original ownership and has benefitted from ongoing care and maintenance. The remarkable interior boasts joinery in high gloss crown-cut teak. There are also a number of lovely features specified by the owners when new including teak portlight surrounds to the hull, a useful office desk in the owner’s stateroom, a double door to the port-forward cabin, unique among 56s, which opens up to provide more space forward, while the bunks in that cabin may be converted to an inviting sofa. Two comfortable reclining chairs with a coffee table grace the starboard side of the saloon, whilst in the fourth cabin has custom oilskin storage. The galley has also been modified to accommodate the owners’ high-end kitchen appliances, which reflect the sellers’ love of fine dining. Her rig is simplicity itself – push button hydraulic furling to her mainsail, genoa, and staysail.
In 2022 Astahaya’s mast, boom and spinnaker pole were serviced and re-painted and her standing rigging was replaced. In addition, her entertainment system, domestic batteries, some sailing instruments, sat phone, PC, life raft, EPIRB, and windlass were all renewed, and her teak decks were sanded and recaulked.
Astahaya is now back in the UK to be sold, the sellers having completed their dream of sailing around the world. Viewings are encouraged.

OWNERS’ COMMENTS
“Astahaya was built and equipped for us and has met our expectations generously. We love living on board. When sailing in exotic places we return on board reviewing fresh experiences. The carpentry, the fabulous varnished crown cut teak and the classic and well designed interiors forward our peace of mind. The Astahaya gourmet galley highlights exotic food making. We choose wines from the «wine cellar» under the floorboards and the right glass from well assorted cupboards. On board we are warmly embraced.
Astahaya is for us who like sailing. The ARC in 2008 was our first challenge and the vessel performed enjoyably well. Astahaya is easy to sail, also shorthanded. In 2022 we did a full service and repaint of mast and booms. A new standing rigging ordered from Oyster was mounted. Safety and maintenance have always been in focus.
There are many highlights from our circumnavigation. Just imagine sailing up the Hudson River along Manhattan in the sunset enjoying a four-course menu around the wonderful cockpit table. From a chilly deck we viewed icebergs in Labrador and returned under deck to a warm and heated saloon.
The Port of Spain carnival in Trinidad was an immense experience and a contrast to Labrador.
French Polynesia gave new friends contributing with fruits and vegetables from their own gardens. A treat to our gourmet cooking. Diving on incoming tide at Fakarava Atoll revealed a veritable Aladdin’s Cave full of remarkable marine life.
Astahaya blended in with a local New Zealand/Australian rally on an in-depth sail through Indonesia. A treat, and they all loved Astahaya!
We happened to visit St Helena during the King Charles coronation festivities and also Napoleon´s last home on the anniversary of his death. This made for memorable ceremonies on the isolated island.
It was good to experience the European culture on the Acores. We had returned home and felt that Europe is one coherent destination.
Astahaya will move on and be home to new owners. We have completed our sails, will miss the vessel, but do know that Astahaya will continue to accommodate in a luxurious and safe way. We wish for many
good sailing experiences.
Owners of Astahaya since 2008
1. CONSTRUCTION
HULL NUMBER
Oyster 56.62.
HULL CONSTRUCTION
Moulded in GRP from female moulds built by Oyster in their own facility under the designer’s supervision, ensuring a smooth accurate finish.
Hull and deck structure moulded to designer’s specification under controlled conditions and all laminating carried out by hand to high standard. Mouldings are produced using a Lloyd’s approved gelcoat and laminating resin. The hull gelcoat is a special Isophthalic resin and the outer laminates incorporate a vinylester resin and powder bound mats. This combination provides exceptional UV, weathering and water resistance properties. Moulded with conventional stringer construction above and below the waterline.
HULL FINISH
‘White’ hull with cove line and four boot top lines in Awlgrip ‘Silver.’
DECK CONSTRUCTION
Moulded in GRP with a balsa core for strength and insulation. In load-bearing areas the core is replaced with plywood for additional strength, and all load-bearing fittings have aluminium backing plates.
The vessel is fitted with an eyebrow detail that is incorporated within the deckhouse roof, which combined with recessed windows, lowers the apparent height of the main saloon.
DECK FINISH
Side decks, forward and aft coachroof, cockpit seats, sole and helmsman’s seat are trimmed with laid teak. The decking is laid using quarter-sawn teak planks and no visible fastenings, laid on epoxy glue. Planking is nibbed into the king plank and the decking is installed with margin boards around hatches, dorade vents, cabin sides and all major deck fittings.
Hull to deck connection is achieved by the deck sitting on a return flange moulded into the hull, which forms a raised bulwark finished with a teak capping rail. The deck edge incorporates three pairs of internal scupper drains which allow the deck to be washed off without staining the topsides.
Deck saloon roof painted with ‘white’ non-slip deck paint forward of sprayhood rail. Beneath the sprayhood teak deck planking is laid.
Deck sanded and recaulked 2022.
