Major is a two-owner sailboat designed by Gary Mull and built by TPI, Rhode Island, USA. Bay sailing or blue water, she’s weatherly, stiff and fast - very fast and easily handled. She features a large roach mainsail with a fractional self-tacking headsail. Easily single-handled with all lines leading to the cockpit. The large mainsail is raised with the help of a Lewmar 50 electric winch on her 57 Foot carbon-fiber mast. The sail glides easily on stainless-steel slides fitted to a Tides Marine Teflon sail-track. The head sail is furling and self-tacking on a custom made stainless steel jib-boom controlled from the cockpit. She’s an excellent sailor in all airs. (examples: Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. to Beaufort, NC – Wind ESE 7 to 15 kts. - 650 NM in 2 days and 21 hours, 69 hours’ total, avg. boat speed 9.4 kts; Annapolis to Solomons Island, Wind NW 15 to 20 k, 46 NM in 5hr. 30 min., avg. boat speed 8.4kts.)
The self-tailing Lewmar 50 electric is also handy for hoisting the main, reefing, raising the dinghy on its stainless steel davits and any other “heavy lifting”.
Her 57-foot high carbon fiber mast is stepped forward to the keel, which gives her a large saloon below with 6'4" headroom. The yacht’s often described as a “big 38” with the complete array of electronics: chart plotter, radar, autohelm, speed, depth sounder, nanometer and AIS.
Down below, Major is simply gorgeous. The beautifully finished and detailed cherry and ash wood work that Freedom Yachts are known for has been meticulously maintained, accented by the teak and holly cabin sole.
