Around 300 Bayfield 32’s were built from Ted Gozzard’s design. Introduced in 1973, production continued until 1990, so Bella Vela is one of the last 32’s produced. Bayfields were built as Great Lakes boats, built on the southern shore of Lake Huron in Ontario CA. Known for their clipper bow and sprit, carved wooden trailing boards and turned spindles in the taffrail, the Bayfield 32 is the manifestation of a cruising boat with an abundance of traditional styling with her long, lead keel and sweeping sheer line. Bayfields endure the test of time due to their solid, hand-laid construction. A thick pan or liner stiffens the hull, encapsulates the bulkheads and adds cosmetic appeal. Sound and weather insulation is increased with the headliner. The interior is well put together. The galley is to starboard with a large top-loading ice box and plenty of counter space. There’s storage bins behind the stove area and teak-faced lockers underneath. The whole interior is nicely finished in teak. Across from the galley is a fold-down nav station and quarter berth. In the main salon there’s port and starboard settees that are wide and comfortable. The table has two different fold-out configurations. The head is forward to starboard with a locker opposite and can be closed off from the main salon and V-berth for privacy. Beneath the V-berth there is storage and two drawers to boot. Berths are 6’6’ long and total sleeping capacity is 6. The self-bailing cockpit is well laid out and is very comfortable for four adults. There are good sized lockers port and starboard and there are large combing bins. The bridge deck step makes for easy access to the cabin and is tall enough to keep overboard water in the cockpit. The deck is quite spacious and incorporates a feeling of security with the raised bulwarks and teak handrails on the cabin top. Inboard tracks can accommodate leads for both the staysail (set forward) and Yankee (set aft) and the toe rail carries a lead for a spinnaker. The bow sprit has a roller for the anchor leading to a hawse pipe – something you’d find on a larger boat. There’s a manual windlass and beefy bow cleats mounted on the bulwark. The mast is keel stepped and halyards route aft to winches through clutches. The boat is well suited for off-shore travel and many 32s have completed ocean passages. She has a nice motion in a seaway and tracks well. She is dry in all wind directions and very fast on a reach. A 32 was sailed single-handed in the 1976 OSTAR transatlantic race and was noted that the off-wind passage to England was nice. The Bayfield 32 is a handsome, quality cruiser and an ideal family boat that will provide drama-free sailing for years to come. There’s no excuse not to get out on the water in a Bayfield 32.
