This world renowned cruiser would make the perfect cruising yacht for a couple or individual looking to modernize a proven blue water boat and set off on their own adventure.
PolarBear is perhaps the finest center cockpit Tayana 52 ever built. She was constructed for famed land speed record holder, Craig Breedlove. She was given the first and one of the only lead keels, which allowed for an oversized, light air mast giving her unusually spritely light air reach and stunning stability in heavy winds and seas.
Mr. Breedlove fitted her with the finest English made stainless steel (rare) and it needs little maintenance to present. With her lead keel, fine sheer and resulting reserve buoyancy, PolarBear takes head seas remarkably well and is masterfully sea kindly downwind.
Polarbear, (then named Wannago) was again refit and circumnavigated by famed sail designer and arguably the best American sailor of his day, Lowell North who took the BaJPur 1500 record with him while passing New Delhi, India. She is a fast, proven world cruising yacht. She has been refit yearly by her present owner who cruised her extensively since 1997.
The Tayana 52 PolarBear is arguably one of the finest large yachts to be found in her delivery range. She sails in light and heavy air better than most cruising yachts, and yet remains notably comfortable and elegant despite her prowess. And with a rare two stateroom layout, she doesn’t really need to be shared.
Polar Bear has a beautiful satin-varnished teak interior with a solid teak and holly sole. Storage space is abundant as is natural light and ventilation provided by eight deck prisms, six hatches, eleven ports, four dorades and six fans.
Starting forward is a single large Guest Stateroom with a queen centerline V-berth, a step to the berth, eight storage lockers, a large hanging locker, 4 large drawers and 6 deep under-bed storage bins. Behind the mirrored forward bulkhead, stand the deck sail and anchor lockers. Given the rare two stateroom custom layout, this is a huge and comfortable Guest Suite with an en-suite sit down makeup/office desk to port, a spacious and well-ventilated bathroom to starboard, and storage lockers in the huge 2 person shower with a teak bench.
The Main Salon, located aft of the guest quarters, features a settee to port with an enclosed TV/ VCR and 3 cabinets. Opposite is a U-Shaped Settee with a large custom dining salon table seating six to eight. The settees are covered in white, leather-like high quality vinyl with button accents, and are replete with large contrasting pillows. Storage cabinets line the walls and are set beneath and behind the settees. Floor panels open throughout the boat for additional storage and easy access to tankage. New custom designer curtains run throughout the yacht, and crystal deck prism lights keep the spacious Hershoff white wall salon and galley uniquely well-lit, bright and cheerful among Tayanas.
The Elegant Galley is located to port off of the salon, and is well thought out for entertaining at anchor or cooking safely underway. It has abundant locker and drawer space, a deep double bowl sink, as well as a pantry/cook's locker. The countertops are white and brand new. Very roomy refrigerator and freezer are both loading and convertible to front loading. The range/oven and microwave are modern and well-fit to this yacht.
Next aft on the starboard side is a well designed, chart size, Navigation station and table located next to the centerline companionway. The nav desk lid opens to find a hidden computer station wired to GPS for navigation software and Pactor IIe Email, and chart storage, nav tool box. Two large double doors provide excellent access for work on electronics.
Aft of the Nav Station is a large storage locker plumbed and wired for instant installation of washer/dryer. It also holds a 20 GPH watermaker. Further aft is a laundry cabinet with a equipment repair station above with built in vise and tool cabinet.
The Centerline Engine Room is located under the cockpit and aft of the companionway stairs, opposite the Galley. It has notably easy access with floor to ceiling double door starboard side access, a large removable panel with two opening access doors to the forefront behind the entry stairs, a further port side door opening from the aft head, and yet another door reaching aft from the main stateroom. In short, this is excellent and well-integrated engine room access.
The plush Master Stateroom is aft and has a walk-around king centerline berth with a new, extra firm custom mattress as in the guest cabin, both covered in removable custom sunbrella covers (2004). A lovely aft mirror covered bulkhead sets to the lazarette. White leather-like vinyl covered settee sets to starboard and was designed to coordinate with the other fabrics throughout the boat. Copious storage is provided with a grand hanging locker, four standard storage lockers, 8 lockers below berth, 3 lockers below settee, and 9 drawers accompanied by a mirrored dressing table with enclosed TV and storage lockers above. The en-suite Master Head a true enclosed stall shower and a large storage locker. This wonderful master stateroom is truly inviting and comfortable for the ships master and 1st mate/Admiral.
PolarBear is a truly elegant, fast and well-built yacht. She is one of her kind even among her sisterships (with a new cost of 1.2 million). She is well-kept and well-equipped for a circumnavigation in her current condition. She is a very comfortable live aboard/cruiser for 2 couples or a small family. This is a yacht you will be proud to own as a condo coastal yacht or to take on a Pacific cruise without delay.
