The Dreadnought 32 is a fibreglass replica of the Tahiti Ketch that was built by Dreadnought Boatworks of Carpinteria, California.
It was originally designed by John Hanna in 1932 and William Crealock made a few design modifications for Dreadnought Boatworks who produced 83 hulls between 1973 and 1982.
For the person that wants the freedom to go anywhere on the seas, a fast racer or streamlined sailing yacht just won’t do. So when John Hanna dreamed of going to Tahiti, he designed a stout double ender. He determined the shape to be “the best for cruising with maximum comfort and safety, with minimum effort and risk. From here to any given point at the other end of any ocean”. In 1923 he designed the famed wooden Tahiti Ketch and after testing 6 boats for stability, strength and seaworthiness and sea kindliness under severe conditions. He published plans for the ketch which hundreds of people used in building their own boats. John Hanna explains the Tahiti Ketches success.
“She is dry, that means she stays on top of the waves and does not tend to stick her nose under them. She is easy in her motions, She is remarkably easy to handle and obedient to the helm. She has the much desired but seldom obtained merit of a good cruiser. The ability to sail herself and hold her course for hours with the tiller lashed. She has laughed at the worst storm she has ever yet met”.
