The Gallant 53 is a true classic yacht. She is built to be sailed across the oceans in a safe and comfortable way. A yacht that allows the crew to enjoy the wind and the open sea during long voyages. The Gallant 53 is designed by the well-known naval architect and yacht designer, E.G. Van de Stadt. When the yacht was introduced, it was the world’s largest ‘series-built’ glass fibre yacht. Between 1966 and 1973 a total of 22 yachts were built as sloop or ketch by Southern Ocean Shipyard Ltd and by Tyler’s in England.
In 1967 the Gallant 53 was awarded the Lloyd's Register of Shipping 1968 Yacht Trophy for outstanding design, performance, and craftsmanship. It was on a Gallant 53 in 1977 that Naomi James became the first woman to sail around the world single handed. She broke Sir Francis Chichester’s earlier record by two days from his solo round-the-world sailing.
To many people, this Van de Stadt design is still one of the most attractive yachts with it´s beautiful lines and superb proportions.
The Gallant 53, AGLAIA was launched in 1968. The first owner sailed AGLAIA from the boat yard in UK to US, thereafter it has mainly been sailing in US and Canadian waters. In 2013 AGLAIA was bought by the current owner family. It is a US registered yacht. It was sailed to Sweden in 2018 and has been used for family sailing, a few weeks every summer, in the beautiful Scandinavian waters. During wintertime AGLAIA is being stored inside a heated shed and being serviced and upgraded by Vindö Marin.
AGLAIA is a ketch, which provides the opportunity for variety of sails for many different conditions of wind and waves. The furling systems are hydraulic and there are two primary electric Andersen 58 winches. Main, Mizzen and Genua is North 3di from 2021.
The 158 hp Yanmar engine was replaced approx. year 2000 and has approx 900 hrs running time. A bow thruster was installed in 2019 to make manoeuvring easy. Most electric equipment and navigation instruments are all recently upgraded.
All outside woodwork has been varnished in 2020.
The interior is in good condition, the area in front of the saloon was rebuilt by Vindö Marin in 2019 to include a large heads / shower cabin a large forward owners cabin, with plenty of storage space.
For anyone looking for a really nice and beautiful classic ocean going yacht with a great reputation, don’t miss out on Gallant 53, AGLAIA!
