Captain Woody is a classic Down East-style Lowell-designed wooden lobster boat that was built in Bristol, Maine around 1968. She has unique lines that narrow towards the stern with a fair amount of tumble home“ at the transom. A former owner found these features to be interesting enough to perform a complete makeover on the boat at a cost reportedly of nearly $60,000. When the previous owner found her, she had been sitting unused for a number of years. The restoration began by rolling her over to glass her hull with four layers of S-glass, a very densely woven and rather expensive fiberglass cloth. The job was accomplished very well and the results show. Her hull, now fair to the point that there is virtually no outward indication that Capt. Woody actually has a wooden hull. No seams to be seen or flaws to be found. During this restoration, Capt. Woody also had her decks restored and glassed and she received a new cabin and hard top. All of the systems, from power, running gear, tankage to wiring and electronics were renewed. After the restoration, the owner continued to make improvements to the boat adding a new teak bow sprit with remote electric windlass, a full camper enclosure to the aft cockpit and finished off the interior cabin with a bright ceiling leaving her looking even better. Additionally a new combo radar/chart plotter was added, (but since has been removed). She is a head-turner where ever she goes. The hull construction is of carvel planked wood. Ribs are oak. Four layers of fiberglass were applied over the wood in proper fashion and surveys show that there are no levels of moisture in the hull and show no signs of distress or delamantation. Structural integrity of the hull is accomplished where floors, beams, bulkheads, cabin structure and decks work together to provide a strong unit. And the addition of the fiberglass has only increased hull strength and integrity. Most of the trim work, window treatment and hand rails are yellow pine finished bright. There is a forepeak area that is 6‘ long fore and aft. No berths, but they could be easily installed. The cockpit area behind the helm chairs is 6‘ long and 6‘9“ wide at the front and 5‘ wide at the back. Under the fan tail is the fuel tank storage and rudder post apparatus. The boat was sold to a sailor who found interest in the design and in the last few years he has completely redone all the exterior and interior wood trim bright. A fresh coat of paint has been applied and the boat simply looks about as nice as you can expect. The engine runs well. Boat is in excellent shape.
