"Poppy" is a work of art, a perfect mix of beauty and excellent sailing performance. Originally designed and constructed in Denmark for the current owner's father, she has been lovingly maintained to the highest standards. No expense has been spared, from her perfect mahogany finishes to her power winches and electronics. She has spent the last 12 summers day sailing in and around Narragansett Bay with some racing in the classics thrown in. During the off seasons, she has received meticulous care at the best yards in Maine so that every aspect of the boat sparkles.
Sparkman & Stevens designed and built “Poppy” as a coastal cruising boat that combines the beauty of a six meter with a functional interior. The concept was a huge success. "Poppy" is easy to sail and so enjoyable that when offered his pick of the fleet in 2003, Olin Stephens chose to sail aboard “Poppy” in the S&S regatta in Maine. She stands out from the crowd in any harbor and when she lands at a dock seasoned boat builders and sailing enthusiasts alike gather to admire her.
Her Danish builder, Paul Molich, ranked among the world's top builders of wooden boats. Her teak-planked deck and her stained and varnished topsides accentuate her classic lines. A favorite at the S&S Rendezvous at Mystic Connecticut, she became the design inspiration for the very successful Morris M-36 day sailer. The current owner commissioned a complete refit, which included the addition of power winches for halyards and sheets to allow her to be sailed more easily and upgrading interior amenities for day sailing and cruising.
A 2001 profile in Maine Boats and Harbors named her as "The Prettiest Sloop in the World."
Engine is a Yanmar 2-cylinder diesel motor with less than 200 hours on it. Serviced and stored in the winter, it has been impeccably maintained to the highest standard, and is reliable and easy to inspect and service.
