VESSEL HISTORY:

"Our Island" was originally commissioned in 1962 for Stanley and Carmen Spencer of Beverly Hills, CA, and built by Skallerud & Sons of Wilmington, CA.  The basic design and engineering work being completed by William Skallerud with inspiration taken from a smaller DeFever designed vessel the yard had built earlier.

Featured on the cover of the April 2008 Passage Maker Magazine, the issue features a detailed article which attributes many of her design features to those favored by Art DeFever at the time, including "the curve of the bow, the stance of the raised pilothouse, the shape of the windows and the no-nonsense styling from a designer first influenced by the heavy, wood fishing vessels that cruised from San Diego for more than half a century."

A yard noted for construction of heavy, strong, seagoing workboats and yachts, Skallerud incorporated many features more akin to a commercial vessel, including heavy 1/4" steel plating, a USFilter Capac impressed current-protection system, 5,000 gallons of fuel capacity, 4,000 gallons of water capacity, heavy skegs protecting each propeller and rudder against collisions and groundings, a high bow, a Portuguese bridge and a massive stern.

In 1977 and again in 1981, while under command of her third owner, she served as the committee boat for the TransPac race, and also cruised to Mexico, Alaska and made many leisurely trips to Catalina Island during this owner's retirement years.

In 2005 the current owners realized their dream of buying and renovating a liveaboard trawler when they acquired "Our Island" in Long Beach, CA and, after a three-day survey ran her six days non-stop up the coast to her home port of Blakely Harbor, on Bainbridge Island.

Over the next 17 years the current owners devoted many thousands of hours to refurbishing, remodeling, upgrading and improving the vessel as part of a major overhaul and refit, while managing to fit in several trips to Southeast Alaska, the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia and a circumnavigation of Vancouver Island.

The owners lived aboard during the refit which helped inform their decisions on the upgrades they wanted, including completely renovating the interior, room by room, taking many areas of the boat down to the steel studs and rebuilding, fabricating and fitting new interior finishes including over 100 new door and drawer fronts, just below decks, as well as sanding, fairing, priming and painting the exterior, which now gleams like new.

The natural light above and below decks combined with the extensive onboard storage make 'Our Island' a very comfortable live-aboard that has served the current owners well for almost two decades, but with four grandchildren and more on the way, the owners have decided it is time for another family to assume the helm and continue the excellent stewardship of this fine vessel for another generation.

VESSEL WALK-THROUGH:

The May 1962 issue of Sea and Pacific Motor Boat magazine summarizes the general arrangements as follows:

"The pilothouse, galley, salon and broad setteed fantail are in one sweeping deck house on one level, all served by broad walk-around decks. The main salon has generous headroom and approximates 20 by 14 feet.  It is bright and cheery from the 13 large, fixed window lights. The compact galley is on the same level with the salon. The vessel is laid out for berthing seven persons in four staterooms, five forward, besides the owners' immense stateroom aft.  These staterooms are separated by bulkheads and the stand up engine room amidships. Stowage spaces for every conceivable purpose are ample and frequent throughout the entire cruiser and are too numerous and varied to describe".

UPPER DECK:

Accessed via an exterior ladder port side amidships or via an interior staircase from the bridge, the upper deck features a fully functioning helm station with generous bench seating protected from the elements via a canvas bimini.  Aft of the flybridge is the on-deck chest freezer with custom canvas cover, multiple storage bins and an instrument arch. Further aft to starboard is the tender with Honda outboard and a four man liferaft.  To port are the custom stainless steel dinghy bars which act as guides for safe deployment of the dinghy when lifted and lowered by the overhead electric boom in heavy seas. The upper deck extends outboard providing overhead weather protection to the lower side decks as well as to the aft cockpit.

MAIN DECK:

The wide, spacious foredeck is dominated by the massive hydraulic anchor winch, aft of which are port and starboard deck boxes for lines and fenders. Overlooking the foredeck is the Portuguese bridge, providing safe access to the foredeck from the pilothouse in heavy seas as well as protecting the bridge from boarding seas in heavy weather. Moving aft the covered side decks feature port and starboard gates for easy boarding, while leading to the substantial cockpit.  The fully enclosed aft cockpit features wrap around built-in seating with cushions, while an aft stairwell provides  easy boarding access to/from the swim step.  A large stern lazarette functions as the onboard storage locker with room for a full complement of tools, spares and maintenance equipment, while also providing easy access to the hydraulic steering pumps and quadrant.  A heavy, mahogany Dutch Door leads forward from the cockpit in to the main salon.

The main salon is truly a delight to behold, in terms of both its dimensions, natural lighting, excellent sight lines to the exterior and finish details.  The acoustically superior cork flooring sets off the hand-crafted Sapele cabinetry and built-in furniture with new commercial grade upholstery, while the tongue and groove painted Poplar overhead with Sapele trim enhances the sense of space and light.  Solid quartz topped credenzas to port and starboard provide extensive storage while framing the custom centerpiece dining table, fabricated from the original Teak decking.  A custom television cabinet conceals a large leaf for extending the dining table for up to 8 guests, while also framing a 42" Samsung Frame flat-screen television with Sonos Playbar sound bar, above which is a custom environmental center with a rain gauge, temperature, humidity, wind speed and barometer, as well as house and inverter battery bank monitors.

Moving forward to port is a custom u-shaped galley with Pecan floors, solid quartz counters and custom Sapele cabinets. Appliances are all full size and include a Wolf four burner range with oven, a Jenn-Air microwave/convection oven and Miele dishwasher, with a full-size Electrolux fridge/freezer and trash compactor to starboard. The sink features Blanco faucets, an Insinkerator disposal and hot and cold filtered water.  A pass through from the galley, aft to the main salon provides a convenient way to facilitate meal times while ensuring the chef is not isolated from their guests. There is also a small wetbar facing the main salon with an Elkay stainless steel sink, Blanco faucets an Edgestar ice maker and a built-in drinks cabinet.

Stepping up and forward from the galley, a large pantry to port provides extensive storage for dry goods in custom, adjustable shelving, as well as a 32 cf freezer and a Miele washer and dryer with adjustable flooring that compensates for vessel trim.  Opposite the pantry to starboard is the navigation station with extensive electronics (see below).

Forward of the navigation station is the raised pilothouse with convenient access to port and starboard side decks via two Dutch doors.  The recently rebuilt pilothouse console is immaculately laid out to ensure all necessary controls and navigation equipment are within easy reach of the helm.  Hand steering is via a hydraulic jog stick system with duplicate redundancy in the form of a backup electric motor and provision for an emergency tiller to control the rudder if needed.  The five forward facing pilothouse windows flood the bridge with natural light while providing a commanding view of vessel operations to the exterior.  Immediately aft of the helm, against the aft bulkhead, is a bench seat for up to four adults that can be adapted to a generous watch berth if needed.

LOWER DECK:

A stairwell from the pilothouse leads forward to the guest quarters which feature three separate state rooms served by two heads. 

Formerly the crew quarters, the forward stateroom features a bunk to starboard and a custom desk to port with a built-in printer station and tilting storage compartment.  Sapele ceiling trim and painted Poplar overhead continue the theme from the main deck.  A half bath with sink and toilet located to port serve this forward stateroom.

Moving aft to port is a three quarter bathroom with sink, toilet and shower stall, serving the port and starboard guest staterooms.  The port stateroom features an athwartships double berth, while the starboard stateroom features two fore and aft singles. All guest staterooms are amply equipped with storage in the form of custom Sapele cabinetry with quartz counters.  Floor coverings range from new carpet to cork to Pecan in the heads, wall finishes feature Sapele panel ceiling and overheads of painted Poplar creating an elegant and luxurious guest area. Multiple bronze port holes in each stateroom lend themselves to the nautical ambience while providing excellent  natural light and bug free ventilation.

The midships stand-up engine room is accessed via a ladder on the starboard side, immediately aft of the navigation station.  All the ship's plant and equipment is well laid out and accessible within this space, with every onboard switch and outlet numbered and corresponding to each electrical breaker on the main breaker panel.  In addition to the twin Caterpillar diesel engines, this space houses twin Onan generators, the Naiad hydraulic stabilizer system, two air compressors, the Type II MSD, the 220-volt Outback inverter system and a 20 drawer tool chest.  A central work bench with drill press, grinder, vice  and sink further enhance the practicality and utility of this space.

The owners' stateroom is accessed via a separate staircase from the starboard aft corner of the main salon.  This stateroom lies aft of the engine room and is quite magnificent in terms of its scale, fit and finish.  A centerline King sized bed easily fits within this full width cabin leaving ample room for the extensive custom cabinetry to port and starboard with built-in shoe cubbys.  Custom Sapele ceiling, finish work, and cabinetry enhance the luxurious feeling of this room while the painted Poplar overhead, and bronze port holes with recessed accent lights continue the attractive nautical theme. There is a large built in entertainment center with a flatscreen television and DVD storage opposite the bed, to port of which is the door leading to the ensuite head.

Rarely seen on sea going vessels of this size is a full size bathtub with a Mystera solid surface surround built and installed to the owners' specifications and amply supplied by sufficient hot water by the onboard boiler.  Opposite the tub is a vanity with a sink and quartz counters, aft of which is a large, enclosed, L-shaped walk-in hanging locker providing ample space for any number of uses and which includes multiple racks for paper chart storage.
