Description
Ragnar Appelgren (1909-1993) was a Norwegian cosmetics industrialist and passionate sailing athlete. In 1953, he commissioned a large sailing yacht from Bjarne Aas. It was the largest boat Aas had designed to date. It was a 12-meter from the then-recent Cruiser Racer class (Int. C-R), which was inspired by the Metric Formula (FI), but with dimensions more suited for offshore sailing (higher freeboard, deeper draft, more displacement, etc.). The wide launches from the metric boats were retained, giving CR boats an elegance that stands out among all classics. The new boat was built in Fredrikstad (near the border with Sweden) and was the largest built by the Shipyard, which belonged to Aas himself, up to that date. Before World War II, Bjarne Aas had gained significant fame thanks to his 6 m. FI, like Olin Stephens, and he always felt connected to the pure lines of the International Formula. He even won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics in 1924, precisely in the 6 FI class. For all these reasons, the design of the Ingeborg, as Appelgren's boat was named in honor of his wife and daughter, features such marked and elegant launches that also provide a fundamental reserve of buoyancy for bad weather. Inside, it has a very cozy and sporty style at the same time. Entering from the stern, there is the navigation room, with the engine panel and a transverse bulkhead that leads to the main cabin, which is shaped in such a way that it serves as a chart table below. The owner's cabin occupies the entire beam and has a dedicated sink. A door on the port side gives access to the second lobby of the boat, with an ocean staircase (side and towards the center of the boat) and from there to the spacious and airy salon. The transformable sofas have guard berths above, and the daily sink is on the port side at the entrance to the kitchen. The kitchen occupies the entire beam and has ample workspace. Further forward, in the forepeak, a curtain separates the guest cabin from the anchor locker. Appelgren sailed the Ingeborg in the North Sea for three years, until 1957, winning many regattas and taking family cruises. After that date, he wanted to establish his base in Palma de Mallorca, but after another three years, in 1960, he sold the Ingeborg to Manuel Giró Minguella, a Spanish industrialist famous for owning the Ossa motorcycle brand. Manuel Giró renamed it to the current Yanira, one of the 50 Nereids, nymphs of the Mediterranean who, according to the ancient Greeks, took care of sailors, and enjoyed it for ten years until he sold it to a syndicate formed by 10 friends. Later, this fast sailing yacht came to belong to the families of Luis Gil de Biedma and Federico García Planas, until the latter became the sole owner in 1983. In 2013, the boat changed ownership again and its new owner subjected it to an extensive restoration cycle, with a new mast and new sails, new caulking and painting of the hull, refurbishment of the chainplates, and replacement of some planks and frames, as well as renewal of the deck. Since then, the Yanira has participated in numerous regattas with impressive results (including seven King's Cups -six consecutive, several times champion in the Puig Vela Clàssica; several victories in Les Voiles de Saint Tropez and even in the General of Cruisers IR of the Alfonso XIII Barcelona-Menorca trophy, which it won in 2000 and 2005 against modern boats). At the same time, its owner has enjoyed magnificent family cruising experiences, sailing throughout the Mediterranean. Therefore, we can affirm that the Yanira perfectly fulfills the two programs that its design formula had envisioned and is in perfect structural condition to continue doing so with a new owner.
