A very popular S&S design from the post World War II era, WILD SWAN was completely rebuilt and has been extremely well maintained by her owners of 25 years. These were very competitive boat in their day and I am sure she is still a threat on the Classic race course, but sitting aboard her last weekend, I couldn’t help notice how comfortable the cockpit was for sailing and socializing. The deep seats with high combings at a comfortable angle were a nice change from the shallow, deck level seats typical of many of the boats from this era. If you are in the market for a comfortable cruising classic with a good turn of speed for classic racing, come take a look at WILD SWAN. She is worth the trip.
Mahogany planking over oak frames. The transom has an aft rake and a nice shape, painted mahogany over cedar, and has been extensively gone over and repaired during the rebuild. Planking is one inch thick Honduras mahogany. keel is oak/lead. The lead is 8,200 lbs. The rudder is oak with bronze strapping.
Structural Members: 1 inch Honduras mahogany planking. 1 ¾ by 2 inch mostly laminated oak frames, on 11 inch centers, glued with West epoxy mixed with chopped cotton. Fir bilge stringer. 5/16” white cedar hull ceiling. 1 inch by 1 ¾ inch cabin top beams on 9 inch centers. The cabin top is a double layer of fir plywood covered with canvas. The deck is 3/8 inch Ocoume plywood covered with 5/8 inch teak; it had been plywood covered with canvas. 1 ¼ inch by 1 7/8 inch deck beams are on 10 inch centers. 2 ½ inch by 4 inch clamp. Metal rods are run athwartship every four or five deck beams to tie the hull and inner cabin together. 1 ¾ inch floor timbers on 11 inch centers. Floor timber thickness and spacing varies in the length of the vessel. Stainless steel cross strapping is on the inner hull.
Fastenings: 16 bar by 2 inch bronze wood screws are used for plank fastenings replacing the original 14 bar fastenings, in part, to help clean up the old holes for the screws as well as the bungs in the original planking.
