Designed by Philip Rhodes in 1934 and built in Solomons Island, MD by M.M. Davis in 1935, Trivet is a compact cruiser-racer and was drawn as a class prototype (Rhodes #390). Few if any additional boats were built to Trivet’s design and it is unfortunate as she is a good looking, quick, seaworthy, comfortable boat: a perfect small classic for day sailing, overnights and casual classics/PHRF racing.
Trivet’s relatively short ends and a higher volume hull design allow space for simple cruising interior without sacrificing looks or sailing performance. She has an attractive, low profile coach roof, canvas decks, and a raw teak cockpit. Her tall, fractional Sitka spruce rig and boom are original, and she has a suit of Nat Wilson sails in good condition.
Trivet’s interior is comfortable, tastefully trimmed out with white v-matched overhead and bulkheads, varnished trim, deck beams, hanging knees. There is a beautiful Honduran mahogany countertop/engine box under the companionway, and two full length settee berths to port and stb’d. A partial bulkhead provides privacy for the head forward to starboard while still allowing easy access to sail storage in the bow.
Her current owner performed a keel up restoration on Trivet in 2004 and has maintained her to a high standard since. She is bronze fastened, with mahogany planking over white oak frames, laminated mahogany deck beams, and a live oak backbone. During the course of her ’04 refit, she was repowered with a 2 cylinder 15 hp Kubota/Beta diesel engine and fitted with a new stainless shaft and P. E. Luke bronze feathering prop.
Trivet is currently in storage at the P.E. Luke yard in E. Boothbay.
