If you appreciate the art of Custom boat building, I recommend you take the time to read this article

When the owners decided to move from sail into power, they set some demanding criteria for their new boat: It had to be strong and seaworthy enough to handle heavy seas, it had to be fast (no trawlers for them), it had to have comfortable living spaces with separate accommodation for guests, it had to have a galley and dining area up high enough to enjoy views around an anchorage while cooking and eating, and it had to be warm and comfortable for use year-round on the West Coast. Their goal was to explore the beautiful and hard to reach ports and anchorages of the Coast. After extensive research of production and custom boats, the owners decided to have their perfect boat built by Farrins Boat Shop in Walpole Maine.

I am honoured to present Lyla III, a custom built Downeast Lobster Boat.

Farrins follows the tradition of the best custom “lobster yacht” builders in Maine. Together with the owners, they commissioned one of the finest commercial lobster boat hull manufacturers, Atlantic Boat Company, to build one of their Duffy 37 hulls (designed by Spencer Lincoln). This hull design has been proven by many commercial lobstermen in the North Atlantic off New England. Then Farrins took over and built a custom “yacht” on the hull, measuring 42’ from the bowsprit to swim platform.

The Maine boat building community has refined the art of building fast boats that remain comfortable in the often heavy weather of the North Atlantic fishing grounds. The Duffy 37 hull design is semi-displacement, yet has a shallow full keel (with a draft of 4 ½’), a flat after section, a fine entry with enough flare to provide a dry ride and an attractively curved sheer line.

Lyla III’s hull was delivered to Farrins Boat shop where some of the finest craftsmen and technicians in New England finished the boat. They completed the deck house, installed the 545 hp Cummins diesel, and completed the other machinery, electrical, and plumbing installations. A practical custom interior and exterior design was completed with the owner’s input. The high-quality fit and finish is apparent throughout, with the Herreshoff style interior, cherry wood trim, white walls and teak & ash sole. High quality cabinetry and hardware were built throughout. There is ample storage and extra-large tankage to permit extended cruising.

Lyla III features an owners’ cabin forward, with a V-berth, two hanging closets and comfortable seating, as well as a smaller guest cabin to starboard. The head compartment, with a separate shower stall, has two doors for separate entry by the owners and guests. Her 13’2” beam holds a spacious and bright main salon. There is a U-shaped settee/dinette to port and a linear galley, with a fridge, stove and sink to starboard with a durable Corian counter top. Six can dine comfortably when the backrest of the companion’s bench has been reversed. An optional bench extends seating to eight. The helm position is exceptionally comfortable and practical, with a double bench seat and a sliding Diamond Sea Glaze door that allows the helmsman easy access to the side deck for single-handed operation and docking.

A few notable features about Lyla III:

Performance – She is stable, comfortable, and fast. The owners normally cruise at 15-18 knots.

Safety – She is sea-kindly and safe in all sorts of ocean conditions. The full keel and skeg protects the underbody, the drivetrain, propeller and rudder. While on the East Coast, her owners took her on comfortable cruises down to New York, over to Newfoundland and up the St. Lawrence River. On the West Coast, she has circumnavigated Vancouver Island twice and explored the Central BC coast and Haida Gwaii.

Maneuverability - Lyla’s low profile and full keel it creates little windage or sideways drift. The single engine, 28” left-handed propeller, large rudder and bow thruster make Lyla easy to maneuver and dock even in tight, windy conditions

Long term value – Lyla III is a Classic design with rugged construction and built to the highest quality by a renowned builder, which results in a boat that has a lasting value and is a joy to own.
