The hull is a solid fiberglass lamination from the bottom of the keel to 6” above Designed Water Line (DWL), produced with blister-resistant vinylester resin on the outer two laminates below the waterline and Kevlar® reinforcements in critical areas. Above the DWL, hull is fiberglass sandwich construction with 3/4” Airex closed cell linear PVC foam core.
Superstructure and Decks
The superstructure and decks are fiberglass sandwich construction with end grain balsa core and surface mats for print-through reduction. Aft and side decks are teak covered. Boatdeck and foredeck have Awlgrip GripTex® non-skid finish. Bulwark has molded plank lines with gel coat finish.
Fiberglass Lay up Specifications
All FRP laminates are composed of alternate layers of chopped-strand mat and woven roving. Resins, other than those utilized for gel coats, are unsaturated, ISO general purpose polyesters suitable for marine use, and are catalyzed in strict accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. If mineral fillers are added they are of a type recommended by the resin manufacturer. Wherever possible, blending of additives and fillers is done by the resin manufacturer. Where blending is done by the laminator, the manufacturer’s recommendations are followed, and blending is accomplished carefully and thoroughly in a manner minimizing aeration. Gel coat resins are compatible with the laminating resins. Color pigments, where added, do not inhibit cure or affect the properties of the cured system. The minimum glass content of laminate is approximately 35% by weight. The skin coat and the next laminate are both laid up with vinylester resin. The laminate is fabricated by hand-lay up process for either single-skin or sandwich construction. A gradual transition in fiber reinforcement is provided between bi-directional and unidirectional laminates. Where sandwich panels with Airex or balsa cores are used in way of mechanically connected structures, gear, and equipment, a core effective in resisting flexure and compression is inserted (i.e. Marine Plywood).
The Kadey-Krogen 39 Trawler may be boarded through port or starboard gunwale doors or through the centerline transom door into the fully-covered cockpit. Protected by a Barrett polycabonate weatherproof enclosure, the cockpit is comfortable year round. Enclosure panels slide open, eliminating problems with removal, storage and re-installation
Moving forward through a Pacific Marine watertight door, one enters the salon. A convertible settee accommodating two overnight guests is located to port and an L-shaped dinette to starboard seats 5 for dining. Abundant storage is located beneath the settee and dinette. Large sliding windows surround the living area and feature custom retractable shades and sliding teak-framed screens. The interior features high quality lighting, premium Ultra-Leather soft goods and removable deep-pile carpeting. Forward of the settee is a teak bookcase/storage unit.
The galley is to starboard, separated from the salon by an half-height bulkhead. It is equipped with a 3-burner Force 10 propane stove with oven, Sea Freeze double-door upright refrigerator with large freezer, flush-mounted GE microwave oven, extra-deep stainless steel sink and generous cupboards and drawers. This is a two-person galley, rare on boats of this size.
The pilothouse is forward and up three steps from the salon. One step up and integrated into the aft pilothouse wall is a forward-facing setee that converts to a watch berth. A pedestal-mounted table is at its center for casual dining or to serve as a navigation desk. The helm is located on the vessel centerline and is forward in the pilothouse where it provides superb visibility. Flanking either side of the helm are Pacific Marine watertight dutch doors that provide quick and easy access to the walk-around side decks.
Forward and down a curved stairway are the living quarters and entrance to the stand-up engine room. To starboard is the head with separate stall shower and forward is the spacious owner’s stateroom. Equipped with an island queen berth whose mattress lifts on pneumatic struts to reveal an enormous storage locker beneath, the master stateroom includes his-and-hers hanging lockers, large storage drawers and a mirrored teak dresser. Numerous portlights and an overhead Lewmar Ocean Series screened hatch provide light and fresh air.
Turning aft at the base of the companionway, one approaches the soundproof door to the standing-height engine room. The engine is located amidship and has full access to facilitate easy operational checks and routine maintenance.
