A real lifestyle boat, the Sunseeker Camargue 50 has indoor and outdoor lounging areas, a big entertaining platform and an interior designed to pamper two couples. And the drive - well, it’s just the way Sunseekers do. Great!

SUMMER LOVIN' With the summer just behind us I now tested this first owner and only 321 real hours! Camargue 50 in calm Maas-river water and a complete lack of sun. So not the nicest conditions to produce our test-reports and the -normal sunny- pictures but of all the Sunseekers I've driven this one has one of the best hulls afloat. The boat rides naturally level and has a very soft ride offshore -with thanks to our huge wave producing photo boat-. Unlike earlier Sunseekers, the view of the open ‘road’ ahead is unfettered and has heaps of headroom over the helm.

The open cockpit lets you cruise for views in fair weather and foul, and change the ambience from dayboat to champagne cruiser. 50-footer has other big-boat features: a garage for the RIB, a superyacht radar arch, and an amenities centre along the entire starboard side of the cockpit.

The result of our extensive labour is a brighter and more open-plan boat with more luxuries, such as new flatscreen televisions in both cabins and the saloon. New 9mm massive teak on her bathing platform and the seat above. Performance wise there is no sunsititute for larger engines, see for instance our Perhing 45 that has 610hp on a 45ft boat, just as great as having 660hp each on this 50 footer.

Everything it does, it does it with ease. Imagine cruising all day with top end rpm’s in range of 2300-2500rpm like for example the poor performing Camargue 44 does it due to her twin 3208’s (425hp)or later models with the 3126’s(440hp) installed. It is just not powerful enough.

Now imagine doing the same speed but then within the 1200 to 1500 rpm range. That doesn’t only saves you a lot of fuel, it is just so much more comfortable.

DRESS CIRCLE Coming aboard was no more difficult than stepping onto the full-width, teak-topped bathing platform and entering via the moulded stairs at the starboard side of the transom. A hot and cold handheld shower, concealed swim ladder, shore power lead and the huge garage.

Press a button and the lid lifts to reveal the biggest garage I’ve ever seen on a 50 footer where you can store an almost 4m dinghy with outboard rearing to be launched to pick up the morning sandwiches.

A big sunpad graces the rear of the boat and there is second sunpad for the bow, where access is surprisingly good thanks to wide sidedecks, moulded toe rails, handy handrails and a bowrail that extends her length overall with almost one metre. The foredeck is flat to help with your footing, and the grabrails beside the sunpad are big enough to use for security at sea.

The core of this boat, its inner strength, is its wonderful, sheltered, sumptuous single-level cockpit. The eagle-eye windows leading to bigger views.

The layout is pure pragmatism. Portside is guests' seating facing a full-length amenities centre. What could be simpler? The two plush, white-vinyl U-shaped lounges can accommodate eight people. Half the complement gets to ride opposite the skipper, but everyone can converse on the one level.

Evidence of Sunseeker's big investment in its tech centre, which brought a lot of manufacturing back in-house, exists in finish and details. The cockpit table hidden beneath a seatbase is an ingenious bit of work. The table extends on clever hinges and rams to create a setting for four people in the blink of an eye. Tuck the table away and you have a teak floor ready to dance on, all you need is a little bit more volume.

The all-important amenities centre is a long, white, moulded-fibreglass unit to starboard with great looks. It harbours a wetbar with sink and hot/cold water and where we’ve packed a new fridge, new wine-cooler and double zone HOB.

Hidden about the place are courtesy and cockpit lights and various storage recesses.

A hatch in the centre of her cockpit leads into an engine room of generous proportions. Unlike most Sunseekers, the gearboxes are direct-drive models and not vee-drives. Big sea strainers and fuel filters nearby. The electrical system, 12/24V and 240V, is very well laid out with circuit breakers, coded wiring and a split charging system. We even have installed a brand new Victron with Bluetooth module for the 12v (genset) system on board.

The master switches and battery isolators reside in a lockable hatch back in the cockpit. This way you can get going - post engine-room inspection - with a minimum of fuss. Further aft is a utility room with big Kohler genset, batteries, freshwater pumps, air-con units and plumbing. No need to crawl through the engine room, or perhaps the garage, there is plenty of servicing room inside.

Accomodation Down below I found a signature Sunseeker interior with high-gloss cherrywood joinery, newly installed square designed stainless-steel Italian door handles, and light-coloured leather upholstery and liners.

The oiled-teak steps and good grab handles to help you move about the saloon and a creme-coloured U-shaped leather lounge to starboard. There is room for six dinner settings around the cherrywood dinette.

The saloon is air conditioned/heated of course and also surrounded by timber storage lockers. A rather excellent galley with newly installed fridge, with a glass cabinet for glasses and bottles to pop nearby.

I like the fact that the galley amenities are hidden under fold-back timber panels. Furthermore a full teak flooring, recessed two-zone HOB and the microwave oven in a cabinet where it's accessible and once hidden the beautiful finished timber returns. The newly installed fridge and freezer were more than adequate.

TWO HEADS BETTER THAN ONE The boat's accommodation is first class. There are two exceptional cabins at either end of the boat that enjoy privacy. Each has its own ensuite bathroom with all facilities needed. Headroom in the cabins is generous.

Guests have it good compared with their options in a lot of other boats. The aft cabin is a great, with excellent access and no ducking or weaving necessary to find the twin single berths with new installed matresses and backed by a navy blue-coloured man-made suede bedhead.

There is space at the foot of the beds for dressing and more room over the bunks than you will find in most aft cabins. Opening portholes, air-conditioner outlets, a new flatscreen LED television, bedside table, storage under the bunks and a big hanging locker with a full-length mirror.

The ensuite bathroom up front doubles as the day head. You step down into the shower and gain full headroom under the designer rose. The toilet is a Vacuflush and there are mirror-backed lockers.

Up front, newly installed matresses on the island double bed. A good night's sleep will be in the master cabin. A double-width hanging locker, mirror, seven overhead lockers and a brand new LED television complete the picture. The owner's ensuite has a plexiglass half circle door to keep wet and dry separated.

I slotted behind the wheel as though the boat had been built around me. The comfortable helm seat and sports wheel are only part of the driving pleasure. Views are great and hands-free cruising can be enjoyed thanks to a Simrad autopilot and a new to be installed Raymarine plotter recessed in the dash. (included)

Engine gauges are mounted in newly made carbon-fibre panels, the electronic Cat panels nicely obscured by the wheel. Electronic shifts and bow thruster control go hand in hand. Big applause for the new matt-black top our guys made behind the windscreen that reduce glare.

All we have to do is to install the Raymarine plotter as soon as it arrives and furthermore this Sunseeker Camargue 50 is a turn key boat. Viewing is highly recommended.
