Every once in a blue moon, there comes an incredible mopportunity to own a Texas built, Valiant 40! Every once in a while there is a newer Valiant 40 that is well equipped, well loved and ready to cruise anywhere. This is a 1990 Valiant 40 is one of the last 40s built; they stopped building the V40 in 1992. We are proud to offer Petite Ourse a wonderful Valiant 40. She has just completed a circumnavigation and her knowledgeable owners have maintained her as their home and provided many upgrades over their cruising tenure of the last ten years.

This is one Valiant 40 you must really check out carefully. Valiants like this one don’t come along often. She was a great lightly used Valiant in 2006 when her owners bought her with their circumnavigation in mind. They have added all the modern equipment you would want and also safety features and creature comforts. They have used her as she was meant to be as a safe and comfortable voyaging home. The owner’s of this Valiant 40, Petite Ourse, can confirm that the Valiant 40 lives up to its reputation. A reputation earned over 35 years! In the early 70s, when Bob Perry designed the first “Performance Cruiser" the Valiant 40 was thought to be pretty radical in design. Since the 90s Bob Perry’s long fin “cruising” keel and skeg hung rudder have become the definition of a stable fast ocean going sailboat! The modern production boats are downright flimsy compared to the Valiant 40 that is solid hand laid fiberglass with a robust layup schedule.
The Valiant 40 remains one of the very best ocean sailing vessels you can buy and at a great price. Proven over and over, tough and hardy, the Valiant remains a couples cruising vessel of choice as well as a favorite for solo sailors. She is your “all ocean SUV" of the sailing world. No frills. All function! There is a reason that serious sailors choose a Valiant. The build quality is among the best there is. From the hand laid solid fiberglass hull, to the hull deck joint is bolted and glued with 5200. The deck is built of a sandwich of fiberglass over marine ply coring with deck hardware is attached securely with robust backing plates. This Valiant 40 was built in Texas and well beyond the blister years! She is one of the last Valiant 40s built and as such, she is a highly desirable boat.

The Valiant 40 is a blue water boat designed with headroom of about 6’5” in the salon, two staterooms, one head, huge galley, comfortable traditional salon, and loads of storage. Even more importantly there is wonderful access to the engine and to all systems. This is a boat designed to be maintained by her owner anywhere in the world. The boat can be taken apart the way she was put together. The headliner is light creamy Formica with teak battens so you can easily remove the ceiling to get to wiring or bedding areas. You have access to everything. The opening portlights are stainless steel and provide wonderful light and ventilation.
The original Bob Perry Valiant 40 layout is traditional, and it totally works. The vessel is bright and well ventilated with beautiful teak joinery and built in furniture. Starting forward the chain locker is in the bow with the Vberth stateroom. This is a traditional V berth that provides two comfortable berths. A filler cushion can be used to create a wide double berth. There is an overhead hatch for ventilation as well as an opening port. There are cabinets outboard port and starboard as well as two shelved lockers port and starboard to provide stowage as well as storage underneath the berth. To port just aft is the large head with a shower which is one of the most sought after designs. The separate stall shower area is where the standard marine toilet is installed. It’s really nice as a shower seat also. This design gives you a nice vanity and sink with lots of storage space. The head is largely white Formica for ease of cleaning. It is in fact way bigger than the head on a Valiant 42. It is awesome.
The main salon just aft of the main bulkhead is classic and traditional with a solid centerline drop leaf table with liquor storage in the center and straight settees to port and starboard which are excellent sea berths. The starboard side outboard the settee has shelving for books and two large cabinets. The area outboard the port settee has two cabinets and shelving for storage for various gear as well as for books. The main salon has nice 6’5” headroom, an overhead hatch, and a four opening ports just in the main salon area. There are a total of eleven opening ports on the boat! The ports set in the vertical cabin house are genius because you can have them open in rain and generally no rain comes in. Ventilation is fabulous on a Valiant.
The Nav station is just aft of the salon to starboard adjacent the galley. The nav station is a classic, large sit down forward facing Nav station with a chart table with storage outboard and a cabinet below as well as the chart table itself. It is a proper Nav station and ships office with the electrical breaker panel and all the electronics. There is plenty of storage outboard of the nav station and also under the nav seat.
The famous Valiant galley is opposite the nav station on the port side. We call it the famous Valiant Bob Perry galley! Bob is a great cook! There is everything that Bob wants in a galley with ample counter space and good stowage. It is a large u-shaped galley with an opening port and overhead hatch as well as a fan. Petite Ourse has the optional galley cabinet where the microwave is installed over the refrigerator/freezer between the salon and the galley. With the storage outboard of the stove and also the deep storage under the counter at the bulkhead outboard of the double sinks, there is a tremendous amount of galley storage.
Just aft of the bulkhead is the aft stateroom; the master stateroom has a large double berth. There is also a hanging locker, drawers and a dressing seat. It is a wonderful cabin that offers a secure sea berth close to the companionway. There is access to the engine from this cabin also. Aft of the nav station on starboard at the companionway are three large lockers including the wet locker. The companionway stairs are removable for access to the large engine room. It is a walk-in engine room where you have all the mechanicals in the engine space. The interior is solid teak which is no longer available is lovely and this standard "Proven" Valiant 40 layout just simply works great.
The famous Valiant U-shaped galley to port has a double stainless steel sink and mixing faucet with hot and cold pressure water. Large Formica countertops with drawer/locker storage under counter, and cabinets above. There is a gimbaled 3-burner propane stove/oven. The counter opposite the sink houses a well insulated ice box with 12 volt refrigerator and separate freezer with 12v refrigeration. It is a famous galley!

Navigation & Communications
Complete navigation and communication inventory with everything replaced in the last ten years and a beautiful forward facing sit down nav station.
The Valiant is a proven offshore vessel with a true cutter rig with keel stepped mast. The cutter rig provides a divided sail plan so that the sails are smaller and easily manages. The mainsail has mid boom sheeting to the traveler just forward of the dodger. Headsail has Profurl Roller Furler and the staysail also has a Profurl furler. All lines are led to the cockpit for easy single handed sailing.
Hull, Deck, & Ground Tackle
Everything on a Valiant is seriously overbuilt and once the factory moved to Texas it was even more amazing because everything is big in Texas. Also, the Texas Valiants are well past the blister years of Uniflight. The Valiant’s robust hull was laid up hand according to a robust layup schedule of matt and woven roving. The solid fiberglass hull is more substantial the most modern boats floating. There are plenty of Valiant 40s that have gone three times around the world giving their owners a comfortable ride as one of the world's best sailing boats!
