WD SCHOCK 55
KOKOMO is a WD SCHOCK sloop rigged monohull designed by Nelson Marek.
She was fabricated in 1990 and launched in 1991 in California as HARMONY. She was designed to race the Trans Pac race and to my knowledge competed once. The boat was moved to the Great Lakes and was dry sailed for several years before being purchased by Ray Eldean (Eldean Shipyard) and two other owners. Renamed KOKOMO. She was inverted, longboarded and inter-protected (sealed) by Westease. She was extensively updated by the three owners - raced briefly and then hauled out. She was purchased and moved to her current home in Traverse City, Michigan in 1998. Since then, KOKOMO has raced and cruised for the 5 month Great Lakes season. Greg Stuart of Nelson Marek Naval Architects was consulted and the sail plan was changed to asymmetrical spinnakers without a bowsprit, 2011. Racing success was achieved and both buoy and long distance results have been very good. KOKOMO flagged (placed 1,2,3) in section for an unprecedented six consecutive years 2011-2016 Chicago to Mackinaw Race. She was featured in the Weather Channel Storm Stories after rescuing sailors from a capsized racing Catamaran during the 2002 Chi-Mac race (which she won 1st in section). She rates PHRF at -18 and is similar in boat speed to J 145s and Santa Cruise 52s. ORR rating certificates were improved with physical weighing and inclining.
KOKOMO is a non- technical yacht to sail. She can be double handed; the owners have cruised the Great Lakes with concentration in Northern Lake Michigan and the Canadian North Channel. A very large removable V berth makes for a comfortable anchorage. The head features a sit down shower. A safe CNG two burner gimbaled stove with oven is adjacent to the top loaded coolers one of which is fitted with refrigeration and ice making capabilities. A new stainless steel sink and faucet has recently been installed. Removable canvas curtains can be snapped in place to separate the v-berth and head area from the aft cabin area. Another canvas door leads to the head
KOKOMO is truly “a wolf in sheep’s clothing”. She is fast and easy to sail.
