Sandpiper and our family.
Sandpiper has been in our family since 1979. At first we lived aboard in Sausalito with 2 of our 3 children (the eldest, adopted child had gone off to college and she was not enthusiastic for boating anyway) for five or more years. During those early years we were mostly limited to SF Bay or the Delta. Later we began to explore the California coast, dipping down to Monterey, Santa Barbara and San Diego. We learned a lot about the systems of the boat and rebuilt and added to them as weaknesses were revealed. Once the younger kids went off to college, we moved back aboard as a couple and began to really ready the boat for serious blue water.
When we finally reached a point where we could retire and do extended cruising we signed up for the Baja Ha Ha (twice, we missed the first one when work on the boat was not completed in time) and sailed down to Cabo with them in 2005. We truly intended to get to the Caribbean or even the South Pacific. But we made a tactical mistake and sailed up to La Paz to rest. After about six months there we decided that staying in La Paz was too attractive to pass up. The winters are terrific! In 2008 we bought a house in La Paz. In the meantime we explored the Sea of Cortez as far north as Loreto and crossed to Mazatlan with Club Cruceros friends, among other excursions.
We are simply getting too old to face the physical challenges a boat represents, and reluctantly offer Sandpiper to another family more able to enjoy her.
