Any Downeaster owner who has spent any amount of time berthed in a public marina has answered two questions many times:“How big is that?” and “Is that a wood boat”? A generous bowspirit,hefty beam,wineglass transom and the hull’s simulated planking lines are responsible for the general impression that these beauties are bigger and older than they are. The gold-washed navy blue or forest green clipper laminate on the bow is a further contribution to the salty image of this classic ‘70s sailboat.
Created in California with a Maine sailor’s sensibilities in mind,the Santa Ana-built Downeasters evoked nostalgia and tradition when introduced in the 1970s. That’s even more the case these days.

“NORTH STAR” is a fiberglass constructed cutter rigged sailing vessel considered suitable for coastal and blue water cruising. She has a full keel with keel hung rudder, clipper bow with bowsprit and wine glass shaped transom. The topsides have molded imitation planking. The aluminum spar is deck stepped and she has a 40 horsepower fresh water cooled diesel engine.
Starting forward on deck there are double anchor bow rollers, an electric windless and Harken furling unit for the jib. The cabin trunk starts six feet aft of the bow and continues aft where it traditions to cockpit combing. The cabin top has three opening watertight hatches and a centerline skylight hatch. The cabin sides have 4 opening bronze port lights and 6 fixed windows. Teak handrails run fore and aft along the full length of the cabin top on both sides. The side decks are painted with silica nonskid and surrounded by teak cap rails and twenty-21 inch lifeline stanchions that support two coursed of lifeline wire. The lifeline wires terminate at the stainless steel bow and stern railings forward and aft. The cockpit has a binnacle mounted teak wheel helm with magnetic compass, auto pilot controls, wind direction and depth instruments. A fold out cockpit table is mounted on the front of the binnacle. The helmsman seat swings open for access to the lazarette, which houses the steering quadrant and propane storage. The aft deck has a custom stainless steel welded pipe framed solar panel arch and is large enough to move about and work. Two ventilation dorades on the aft deck provide ventilation for the engine compartment. There is a stern mounted stainless steel boarding ladder.
Below decks is a private cabin forward which has a queen sized V-berth, cabinets, drawers and a hanging locker. The chain locker is accessed via a door in the forward bulkhead. Walking aft the enclosed head with shower is to port and has two doors for access from the forward cabin or main salon. There is a hanging locker opposite the head. The main salon has single stacked berths on both sides. The lower berths convert to doubles. The U-shaped galley is in the aft port corner of the cabin and has a three burner propane stove, double stainless steel sinks, and a top loading reefer. Opposite the galley is the sit-down navigation station which has navigation and communications equipment and a large chart table with storage. Aft of the navigation station is a double sized quarter berth. An opening port light in the cockpit well provides light and ventilation for the quarter berth. The companionway ladder lands between the galley and navigation station. The engine is accessed by removing the companionway ladder. The engine space also houses the fuel tank, water heater, battery banks and refrigeration unit.
