"Libre" represents a rare opportunity to own an exquisite world class cruising yacht. Her fiberglass hull was laid up in 1977, 42% heavier than her original design specifications. Almost 6 years later and nearly 1000 board feet of teak consumed, "Libre" went for her first sail. Constant upgrades have been made by her extremely knowledgeable owners, throughout her life and a major refit was completed in the galley area in 2002.
As you will read below, she differs a great deal from her original plans, but she is the safe, strong, high performance world cruiser Bruce Roberts intended her to be and more. Redundancy was a major design consideration throughout her build. While she is not for everyone, she is the perfect choice for a cruising couple with live aboard and/or voyaging plans. There are well over 700 yachts of this design in use world wide. They have proven to be fast, safe and extremely comfortable under sail, even in the harshest conditions. She is powered by a 130hp Perkins diesel as opposed to 85hp as specified in her design specifications so powering into a head sea is more easily accomplished. Her powerful ketch rig allows for many sail configurations to deal with different wind and sea conditions and the mast height is intercostal waterway friendly, something not normally found in a 53 footer.. Her long sheer accommodates the large center cockpit with hard top beautifully. The cockpit can be fully enclosed for inclement weather or screened in as well. "Libre’s" interior was designed as an extremely comfortable live-aboard for a cruising couple. Her joiner work in teak, Birdseye maple and solid white maple is first class. Her deck house was raised and widened to allow for increased head room, additional ambient light, and tremendous amounts of storage. Her hull is lined with two inches of closed cell foam while her overhead has three inches. This helps to provide for a comfortable, dry interior in any weather. She has both reverse cycle air conditioning and an Espar diesel heater. Her very large aft cabin, head with separate shower, and a large amount of storage makes living aboard a luxury. Her galley was designed for a gourmet cook, complete with a 8 cu. ft. freezer, an 8 cu. ft. refrigerator as well as a beverage cooler. There is an electric oven, microwave, trash compactor, and an ice maker. There are three water pumps plumbed in the system, one 120 volt and 2 separate 12 volt units. Opposite the galley is a beautiful Birdseye maple and teak dinette area that converts to a double bunk. There is a head with separate shower aft of the dinette area. Moving forward is a commodious sunken seating area, perfect for entertaining or just relaxation. In the forepeak, there is an over and under berth with two very large hanging lockers. All hanging lockers throughout the vessel are cedar lined. The list goes on and on. "Libre" is one of the finest examples of this yacht ever produced.
"Libre’s" interior was designed to be comfortable, luxurious, and as a functional live-aboard yacht with world wide capability. Over 1000 board feet of teak, birdseye maple, and other fine woods and thousands of hours of workmanship were used in her creation. The minute you arrive you feel like you’re at home in a warm, beautiful surrounding. The interior is finished in a combination of satin and gloss varnish and the joiner work is second to none. The hull has two inches of insulation throughout which is covered with beautiful teak wood slats. The overhead has three inches of insulation, which combined with the hull insulation, creates a warm dry interior in cold weather and a cooler, dry interior in warmer climates. There are beautiful hand rails throughout which make moving about underway easy and safe. While her owner’s lived aboard for 30 years, she looks to be in like new condition.
Entering the vessel from the companionway you arrive in the galley/dinette area. The galley is large, well lit and equipped for a gourmet cook. The dinette, across to starboard, consists of a beautiful birdseye maple and teak table with seating for four. The table drops to create a double berth. Aft of the dinette is a complete head with access to the starboard machinery space.
Moving forward and a step down is the beautiful main saloon. It is stunning and unique. The detail in the joiner work is as good as it gets. It’s perfect for entertaining and an area that just feels good to be in.
Forward of the saloon is the guest cabin. It has two single bunks, one up and one down and features two large cedar lined hanging lockers and lots of storage. There is a large Bomar overhead hatch and access to the sail locker, which is just aft of the anchor locker in the fore peak.
Entering the boat from the companionway you arrive in the large well lit galley/dinette area. The headroom is about 6‘ 6” in this area. The raised deck house allows for larger windows than originally planned. These along with the large overhead hatch, two deck prisms and port lights provide an abundance of ambient light. The solid white maple cabin sole also brightens this area as it does throughout the rest of the vessel. The large U-shaped galley, to port, is equipped for a gourmet cook. It features a Princess (3) burner electric stove and oven with a removable Corian cover, which can be safely stowed underway. There is a double stainless steel sink also with a removable top, a microwave oven and a built in two burner propane stove as a back up, in case of a 120 volt power interruption. There is also a Dickerson propane grill topside. The refrigeration unit is custom made. It is both 120 volt and engine driven and utilizes holding plates in the 8 cu. ft fridge, 8 cu. ft. freezer and a 2 cu. ft. beverage cooler. The insulation is 6 to 9 inches thick for maximum efficiency. There is an ice maker, a trash compactor, a built-in wine locker, an exhaust fan, and a large pantry. There is plenty of storage and cupboards with beautiful Tambour doors. Opposite the galley is a U shaped dinette with seating for four. The beautiful birdseye maple dinette table drops to make a double berth. There is ample storage under and behind the dinette. There is a complete head aft of the dinette area that also opens to allow access to the starboard side of the machinery space. The headliner in this area is naugahyde which is fastened to the overhead Velcro.
Forward of the galley/dinette area of the boat and a step down is a beautifully decorated and commodious main saloon. Throughout the cabin is unique joiner work from the liquor and glass storage cabinet to the TV locker with Tambour door to the treasure chest containing the satellite TV controller. What you see is beautifully hand crafted woodwork that works perfectly with the colors of the other materials and decorations used in the cabin. The seating for 6 to 8 is very comfortable making this area perfect for entertaining. The use of Corian table tops, overhead hatches, port lights and deck prisms create a well lit area during daylight hours. The 110 volt and 12 volt lighting works perfectly as well.
The guest cabin is forward of the main saloon and features two separate high/low berths. There are two very large cedar lined hanging lockers and four storage cabinets with beautiful cane doors. There is also a large storage space under the port side berth. The port side of the cabin is covered in teak slats. There is a large overhead hatch providing ambient light and an emergency exit. There are two port lights, both with beautiful teak shelves below. On the forward bulkhead, there is access to the huge sail locker. Forward of the sail locker is the divided anchor locker.
The nav station is located in the pass thru from the galley to the owner’s stateroom. There are double nav desks with plenty of room to spread out charts. The 8 cu. ft. Freezer is housed in this area as well. There is a swing out nav seat and proper lighting for navigating. The electronics package is complete with GPS, radar, AIS, two VHF radios, sailing instruments, multi-meter, SSB and more. There is a separate breaker panel for this area and two 12 volt batteries dedicated to the navigation instruments. There is also a switch to allow a connection to the house batteries for redundancy. There is a port light and a deck prism in this area. There is plenty of additional storage as well as a built-in file box, VHF holder, storage drawer and two large storage drawers under the nav desks. Across from the nav station are two removable access panels to the machinery space. The main breaker panel is located in this area has been carefully planned out and constructed to make service accessible. There is a deck prism in this space as well. This space can also be accessed from the starboard side via the forward head.
The owner’s stateroom was designed for live-aboard comfort, privacy, and safety. There is a large Bomar overhead hatch that provides ventilation and an emergency exit. Port lights add to the ambient lighting. There is a queen sized berth with a Select Comfort air mattress running athwartship. There are four large cedar lined hanging lockers and three large storage cabinets. A flat screen TV is mounted behind a tambour door. The owner’s head has a shower with a high end European shower fixture, a vanity with sink, a beautiful teak medicine cabinet and plenty of towel storage. There is a washer/dryer combination unit in the head area as well as towels, storage and a built in hamper.
