This Tancook Whaler is ready to be voyaged!
Local Shipwright to Bainbridge Island, Charlie Taylor, began building Jack O'Lantern and then his son finished his work. Jack O'Lantern had a full life touring the Northwest then fell into disrepair. The current owner has poured his heart, soul and checkbook into the boat to make her sail ready again! Everything from the deck up is new! The masts were made from local douglas fir and the life line stanchions, spectra life lines, turnbuckles, standing rigging, vectron synthetic running rigging, sails, pinrail, deck paint and brightwork is all new!!! The Lugger 45hp diesel was rebuilt and is still in the break in hours. Her hull is red cedar carvel planked with an oak stem and stern timber. She's a centerboard schooner that was designed to fish banks off of Nova Scotia. The Tancook Whaler needed to be seaworthy and be able to carry a load but still be able to offload her fish in the shallows along the shores of Nova Scotia. The benefit now is that she can anchor in shallow bays; and when the sails are up you crank the centerboard winch, which is off a WWII bomber, which lowers and raises the stainless steel centerboard to maximize her efficiency through the water.
She has a nice open feel down below and smells just how you want a wood boat to smell. She has an AirHead composting toilet which takes all the bad smells out of a boat and these heads don't clog like other marine heads. She would make a great live-aboard. She even has radiant in-floor heating (just needs some attention to get it going but all the paperwork is there). The cabin is open but cozy with a lot of personality. Jack O'Lantern has a great history and with the hours of labor the current owner has put into her she's ready to go sailing!
The current owner recently replaced three planks and the tops of two frames. He replaced the foot around the center board housing, replaced fasteners on the last lapstrake port bow plank. On the engine he had the injector pump rebuilt, set the timing, replaced the water pump and installed a new propellor, he also put in a new bilge pump, fresh water pump and sump pump. He installed new flooring, and re-upholstered all the cushions including the front birth and painted the interior. The current owner has put the time and money into this Tancook Whaler for her to be ready to voyage!
