I A wooden built Scandinavian classic cruiser, this 1967 Neptune Cruiser was restored by a Dutch specialist a few years ago but has not been sailed since. Now in need of some attention. Original design from 1938, with mahogany on oak frames with mahogany cabin and cockpit and a pine deck. The Neptune Cruisers are still built but now in fibreglass and are very popular in the Baltic with a number of races held each season. Complete with a purpose built 2014 twin axle trailer. This Neptunkryssare, built in 1967 was refitted by a specialist in the restoration of classic Scandinavian yachts based in the Netherlands and sold by him in 2014. A new aluminium mast was fitted as the previous owner had used the old wooden mast for firewood!
This Neptune Cruiser has not been used for the last few years since being refitted. Her internal and external wood finish does require attention now to bring her back to good order.
Skerry cruisers (or Square metre yachts) are yachts, usually wooden, which are constructed according to the Square metre rule. The rule applies to the sail area in square meters.
Originating from Sweden, they were historically most popular in the Baltic Sea, though some classes also saw popularity in other European countries and USA. Skerry cruisers are construction classes, meaning that though the boats are not identical with each other, they are all built according to same formula, making them broadly comparable in size and performance. Most skerry cruisers are slender boats, with low freeboards and tall rigs.
The original Skerry Cruiser designs were the most beautiful and fastest yachts in the world when they first came out in Sweden exactly 100 years ago.
The rule produced a classic elegant racing yacht with timeless beautiful and fast lines. With its slim and long hull the speed of these boats is remarkable. In light wind the friction in the water is kept to a minimum, while at increasing speed the overhang portions of the design increases the hull speed by stretching the waterline.
