ARGUMENT is a 1925 built Herreshoff S Class racing sailboat, hull number 964, and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.
The S-Class Sloop was designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff late in 1919 and comprises one of the most significant one-design racing classes of the era. They are revered by their owners for their responsive helm, for their ability to stand up to a breeze, and for their ability to ghost along in light air.The S Boat has a five-eighths rig and a powerful sail plan consisting of a self-tending jib, a main and a spinnaker. The 42-foot spruce mast is tapered, hollow, and curved. The running backstays and overhanging boom carry about 426 square feet of sail and provide a thrilling ride. The cockpit is comfortable and reasonably dry, and there is a small cabin for protection from the weather and storage.
ARGUMENT had seen and extensive refit prior to 2009 to include the following:
New frames throughout
Five or more new floors timbers
New bronze ballast keel bolts
New bronze shear clamp and bilge stringer keel bolts
New marine grade plywood bulkheads at the mast partners, fore and aft cockpit
New deck, deck beams and Dynel covering
New rudder, rudder post and stock: new gudgeons and pintels
Numerous new planks including molded oak sheer plank
New hood ends on several planks and these have been scarfed to marine standard ratio of 12:1
All new butt blocks
New sole in cockpit and down below, including sole supports
New seats below and cockpit seats
New mast (2013) and standing rigging, running rigging including Harken hardware
New spinnaker pole
New mast partners
New S.S. chain plates
There are large S class fleets on Narragansett Bay and in Western Long Island Sound, and the regatta schedule is quite busy. The powerful sail plan and pleasing shape hull combine to create a competitive racer that has been active for 90 years and still going strong.
ARGUMENT also comes with her own custom made trailer that is included with the asking price.
