For his 1899 America’s Cup defender, Columbia, Nathanael Herreshoff introduced a new model tender that was a significant departure from its plum stem, straight keel predecessors. Referred to as the Columbia lifeboat or Columbia-model tender the original 14’ design spawned a 45 year succession of iterations as the builder manipulated the scale, length, and beam to suit the particular major vessel or purpose. More widely known for their rowing and sailing abilities, several models were supplied with gasoline engines and listed as launches in the building records.
The cedar on oak carvel planked hull of the 2016 IYRS launch is based on a 1913 gasoline powered Columbia model launch measuring 13’1 ¼” x 4’4”. Replacing the 2hp Brownie motor is a 24 volt electric motor powered by two 12 volt AGM batteries; a system designed by Budsin Wood Craft, a company with over twenty five years of electric boat building experience. Silent, simple, and wrapped in the time tested and exquisite Columbia model the combination should prove a delight on the water.
