Custom Ker 42 This Ker 42 is one of the world’s most advanced IRC grand prix racers in the 40’ range. Now in its second season, the boat has achieved unparalleled success in Asia, winning its first Category 1 offshore race two weeks after commissioning. It went on to win the presitigous and exceptionally challenging Asia Yachting Grand Prix 2015-2016. She was designed to win against all competitors, whether poled or asymmetric, in all conditions and in all types of inshore and offshore racing. Jason Ker, one of the most
successful designers in IRC history, created Black Baza’s design after nearly two years of
intensive research, which drew on his super-computing capabilities in Valencia, Spain, and five years of Asian wind data.
She is Ker’s most advanced hull and the design was incorporated into his Ker 40+ boats that compete in the UK’s Fast Forties fleet. The boat is glass and foam infused epoxy. It was intentionally built without carbon (except on limited basis in some panels) to avoid severe rating penalties that could not be overcome with this length of boat competing against older, noncarbon boats. The cabin was carefully designed for access and headroom at no cost to performance. A watertight aft compartment (accessible from deck) was installed for safety.
The owners assembled a world class build team. The boat was built by McConaghy Boats, renown for building high performance race boats. Pure Engineering provided world class engineering input, with the optimum balance between strength for tough offshore racing and weight savings for light air inshore racing. Southern Spars provided a top quality, hybrid high modulus rig with deflectors and hydraulic forestay. North and grand prix sail wardrobe. Olectric installed B&G electronics and Sydney Rigging provided top-of-line rigging.
Black Baza is one of the highest spec’d boats on the market and includes many of the
advanced systems found only on high end grand prix racing boats (typically TP52s), including
UnReels, pro trim, string drops with Harkin wheel, hydraulic forestay with gorilla fabric forestay and 5T headstay load. Lines are under-deck and carefully designed to ensure a dry boat in even roughest conditions. No detail was overlooked or expense spared in design, construction and equipment, from top-of-the-line systems to the Hakauki fenders.
The owners continued to optimize Black Baza since its commissioning, replacing its original
keel with a new longer steel fin and new-design lighter bulb. The owners also engaged
Southern Spars and one of the Oracle’s team lead trimmers to perform extensive rig tuning.
Today, Black Baza is fully optimized and easily sails to and above its rating. With a current IRC rating of 1.232, the boat is designed to be at the front of the fleet of its immediate competitors. The boat starts planing at about 13 knots of wind. Once on the plane, it pulls away from the competition with remarkable speed. The boat performs exceptionally well in tough seas offshore, hitting 20-25 knot speeds indefinitely. Likewise, having shed 400 kgs of its original design weight, the boat is manoeuvrable and competitive inshore.
Black Baza has been impeccably maintained with two full time professional crew throughout its history. This team is closely managed by one of the top professional race program managers, who regularly races on the boat. Rigging is regularly updated as required by Sydney Rigging."
