Wild Joe – AUS 7002:
Wild Joe is an IRC optimised offshore racing yacht launched in June 2002. Designed by Reichel/Pugh and built by Azzura Marine on the Gold Coast, originally as Wild Oats, as the first offshore racing yacht to use the CBTF (Canting Ballast Twin Foil) concept.
The keel can be canted to windward upto 40 degrees with a forward rudder providing the positive resistance in place of the keel. The CBTF system gives superior performance in all conditions with further developments proven by Reichel/Pugh’s design of super maxis Wild Oats XI and Alfa Romeo.
Since Wild Joe was launched in 2002 it has out performed in all conditions and continues to win regattas and races. Today Wild Joe holds the Pittwater Coffs Harbour race record and is the current IRC winner of the last Sydney to Moolooabah race, the Sydney to Southport race, the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour race.
Wild Joe has been professionally maintained and in immaculate condition. Wild Joe’s extensive racing campaign has equipment to allow for multiple configurations depending on the type of racing such as inshore, offshore or long ocean racing. This allows for maxim speed and optimised rating to the suited conditions and racing fleet.
In a twilight or social racing mode, Wild Joe can be sailed with as little as 3 people. In offshore racing such as the Sydney to Southport race, Wild Joe is configured to carry 9. During inshore regattas Wild Joe can race with as little as 12 crew to 16 crew depending on the type of racing courses and conditions. All safety equipment is for up to 16 crew members.
During 2006 an extensive refit was completed replacing and upgrading the hydraulic keel system by Greg Walters and the electrical systems by Olectric Marine.
The Hydraulic system upgrade was a result of the developments following the Volvo Ocean Race and the advancements of super maxi Wild Oats XI. The system is fully services by Greg Walters’ Central Coast Hydraulics.
Olectric Marine also completed a refit of the entire electrical systems converting Wild Joe to 24 volt system. The boat has been completely rewired to reduce weight. Extensive battery capacity allows Wild Joe to race for extended periods without the use of a motor. In normal offshore races the motor will run for 1 hour every 4 hours to recharge the batteries.
The keel control system and the forward rudder control system is supplied and maintained by Olectric Marine.
