STARBUCK is a custom built, high-performance cruising yacht, built by a seasoned yachtsman with a lifetime of racing and cruising experience. After retiring and spending three years cruising aboard a Tayana 52, he and his wife finally decided to have their own "ultimate cruiser" built.
Accepting the fact that most cruising sailboats, by nature, are slow but comfortable; and racing boats, by nature, are fast but uncomfortable...this hybrid yacht would combine the best features of each, while eliminating the downsides.
This "ultimate cruising yacht" would have the body and speed of a race boat, but with the luxury, comfort and safety of a cruising boat; for the best of both worlds. Most importantly, she would be easily handled by a couple, utilizing a power winch and manageable sailplan. She would have a huge salon and efficient galley for entertaining. The spacious master stateroom would have incredible storage; and the head would feature the luxury of a bathtub! Plus, she would have two comfortable guest staterooms; and a guest head would include a stall shower. There would even be work/utility room. The interior would be light, bright, open, clean and contemporary...not dark and traditional.
After consulting with multiple West-Coast designers, and extensive discussions with world-cruising authors Steve and Linda Dashew, they chose renown naval architect Bob Perry to design this ultimate performance cruiser. Famous racing-yacht builder Dennis Choate/Dencho Marine was selected for construction. She was built on a "cost plus" basis, not on a fixed bid, so there were no short cuts or compromises in construction. The owners were at the yard daily to monitor construction, which took an entire year! She had extensive shakedowns and refinements prior to completion. The design philosophy included the following:
Recent upgrades include a stunning new paint job on her topsides, new sails, and a custom mattress for her master stateroom.
STARBUCK has been kept in truly immaculate condition her entire life, and shows like a vessel a fraction of her age. Replacement cost would be $1.1 million or more, making her an exceptional value. If you are looking for a cruising boat that is exciting to sail, and powers faster than a trawler, this yacht should be at the top of your list.

STARBUCK's interior is light, bright and open. The spacious salon features a huge dinette that seats up to eight! A long settee opposite also accommodates a small crowd. The gleaming teak and holly sole is in exceptional condition, and shows almost no wear. A 40" Samsung LED flat-screen TV with DVD player is forward of the dinette. The entire cabin has ample storage, with numerous book shelves, drawers and cabinets throughout.
The full-width MASTER STATEROOM is forward of the salon. There is a double Pullman berth to starboard, with "his and hers" hanging lockers to port. There is incredible storage, for full-time living aboard, including a linen closet.
The ensuite HEAD is forward, and actually features a bathtub (with a shower of course!) Other features include a Scandvik SS sink with faucet, W/C Skipper head.
The forepeak is a utility room. with storage and a workshop, as well as an anchor locker. There are work benches, plus cabinets and drawers on both sides.
Moving now back to the salon...the forward-facing NAVIGATION STATION is aft to port, and features a large chart table, a custom Bass electrical panel with systems monitors, and electronics. More details to follow.
Aft of the Nav station is the GUEST HEAD, also featuring a Scandvik SS sink and a Vacuflush head system. There is ample storage, light and ventilation.
Aft to both port starboard are the GUEST STATEROOMS. Each one features a double berth and good storage.
The spacious galley is aft and to starboard. It is well thought-out, with intelligent and practical use of space. There is excellent storage, including recessed plate racks and numerous drawers.
STARBUCK's sailplan has plenty of power for exhilarating performance, but without the need for a large genoa, full spinnaker, running backstays, and large crews. Designed to be sailed by a couple, her 100% jib tacks in seconds. A power winch makes raising or sheeting the full-batten mainsail virtually effortless...with the touch of a button.
The yacht was a custom design by renown Naval Architect Bob Perry. Construction by Dennis Choate, Dencho Marine, (well known racing yacht builder) and supervised continuously by her owner, a lifetime sailor, boat owner, and former Yacht Broker and Tayana Yacht importer/dealer. She took over a year to build.
Hull: Vacuum-bagged fiberglass sandwich construction of vinylester resin, biaxial and unidirectional E-glass with 1" balsa core. Additional laminates and carbon fiber utilized in areas where additional strength was desirable. There was NO coring near any hull penetrations: the hull is 1" thick solid fiberglass in areas of thru-hull fittings, prop shaft, rudder post, keel attachment, and keel bolts.
Deck: Fiberglass sandwich construction of E-glass with 1" balsa core, with reinforcement in areas of high load and near deck hardware. She has a solid fiberglass hull to deck joint, for a clean look and the ultimate in strength. Molded toe rail, from stem to mast.
Keel: 10,200 lead casting, 3 percent antimony by volume; secured with twelve 1.25" diameter stainless steel bolts, stainless steel backing plates, and 3M-5200 epoxy. Her 8'6" draft and bulb keel provide maximum stiffness in a breeze.
Rudder & Steering: The rudder is closed-cell PVC foam and fiberglass with a carbon-fiber rudder shaft. "Tides Marine" self-aligning spherical rudder bearings. Double steering wheels are custom, carbon fiber, with dual quadrants. Edson bearings, sheaves and cable.
