"Doado" has a warm and inviting interior as typified by the Hans Christian yachts with beautifully-crafted teak joinery throughout. The interior is very clean, with only a few minor nicks and scratches as would be expected. All pilothouse window frames and opening ports are in solid bronze polished bright on the interior and allowed to tarnish naturally on the exterior. New 1/2" highest quality Lexan installed in all pilothouse windows in 2003. There are four Weems & Plath brass oil lamps aboard, as well as Weems & Plath barometer and a Chelsea ship's clock. This boat has the "Convertible" interior layout plan, which offers the best use of interior space vs. the "Standard" and "Great Lakes" alternate plans.
Forwardmost is the anchor locker with split anchor wells and access through louvered teak doors. Next aft is the "work" room with counters port and starboard and generous drawer and locker storage for tools, spare parts, maintenance supplies, etc. Next aft and separated by a door is the master stateroom with a large pullman-style berth to starboard and a vanity sink and large hanging locker to port. Again, there is very generous storage in the form of drawers, cabinets, lockers and bookshelves.
Next aft is a spacious combined head, sink and shower to starboard, and a pilot berth with settee to port. The pilothouse is next aft up two steps. Forwardmost in the pilothouse on the starboard side is the inside steering station with helm seat, followed by a lovely dinette that very comfortably seats four and converts to a roomy double berth for occasional guests. Next aft to starboard, and right next to the companionway entry, is a hanging wet locker.
Forwardmost in the pilothouse to port is the navigation station with large chart table and hinged fold-away storage seat, as well as the electrical panel, navigational electronics and marine radios. Next aft is the galley with double sinks, front and top-loading refrigerator box, front-loading freezer box, and gimballed LPG stove/oven. There is plenty of drawer and locker storage in the galley area. One step up is the companionway door with a hinge-down dropboard leading to the cockpit. There are three storage lockers in the cockpit and a storage box doubling as a raised helm seat behind the binnacle. The entire cockpit is covered with a new Iverson bimini top and full enclosure, and a swing-down boarding ladder is incorporated into the stern platform.

The inside helm also houses a Signet System 1000 speed, depth and log. A Signet MK-172 and MK-151 provide depth, speed and anchor alarm in the master stateroom. The backup GPS is a Garmin 75. Computer hook-ups for both the RayMarine and Garmin GPS units are provided at the navigation station.
The Alpha 4404 below-decks autopilot has the main control head at the inside helm, with a secondary station in the cockpit. The main processor was upgraded to the Alpha Spectra and the ram overhauled in 1995, and all autopilot wiring was replaced in 2001.
The navigation station houses a Standard Horizon Titan+ VHF marine radio with a remote speaker in the cockpit. The nav station also houses a Yaesu FT-747GX ham radio with full band transmit and receive modifications (1996). The SGC-230 auto-tuner is mounted in the lazarette, runs to an insulated backstay and is grounded to a Guest grounding plate.
The stereo system consists of a Kenwood KDC-715 Excelon CD/receiver connected to a Kenwood KDC-C717 10-disc CD changer, and driven by a Kenwood KAC-849 600W amplifier, all new in 2001/02. There are six MB Quart speakers housed in custom teak speaker cabinets - two in the cockpit, two in the main salon and two in the master stateroom, selectable fore and aft.
12V DC and 120V AC systems with Newmar electrical panel. Most primary wiring has been replaced with Ancor tinned-wire. Digital voltmeter, amp-hour meter and amp meter to monitor house bank. 30amp shorepower connector and shore power cord.
1984 Universal 6.5KW auxiliary generator. The main engine has a 120amp high output alternator controlled with a three-step regulator. The genset has a 90amp high output alternator with three-step regulator and dual outputs - one for the genset starting battery and one for the house bank.
Heavyduty stainless steel bow and stern pulpits with double lifelines and boarding gates port and starboard. The stern pulpit rail extends well forward, almost to the pilothouse for added security, and is integrated with a stern boarding ladder system and dinghy davits. The bow pulpit extends forward of the headsail furler, and there is a teak platform on the bow sprit with an integrated anchoring system. There are heavyduty, bronze mooring hawsers with integrated cleats forward, aft and amidships. Heavy stainless steel mast pulpits with integrated teak storage boxes and belaying pins are either side of the mast.
Teak decks are in good condition. Gelcoat surfaces are in good condition with very few scratches and dings. Teak trim/brightwork looks beautiful with surface coatings maintained in 2016 and in excellent condition.
Anchor gear includes the primary 45# CQR with 200' 3/8" BBB chain, and a secondary 45# CQR with 50' of BBB chain and 250' of 3/4" nylon rode. Both anchors store in heavy duty bow rollers incorporated into the bow sprit/platform. The Simpson Lawrence Sealion electric anchor windlass was re-built and re-painted with Sterling LPU in 1996. Salt water deck/anchor wash system at the foredeck. Normal compliment of USCG-required safety gear plus LifeSling, Firdell Blipper (radar detector) and tri-color light at the masthead.
In 2002 all the glass in the pilothouse ports was replaced with 1/2" glazing-quality Lexan. At the same time all glazing and gaskets were replaced in the deck hatches.

Kenyon extruded aluminum mast and boom stripped and re-painted with white Sterling LPU in 1996. All lights and electrical wiring replaced at this time, sheaves overhauled and the deck step re-bedded. Single spreader cutter rig. Standing rigging is 1x19 stainless steel oversized wire with Norseman turnbuckles. The Strong mainsail track and slider system was installed in 2002 to facilitate easy hoist and reefing. An adjustable heel-lift system for the downwind pole with ball-bearing car was added to the mast in 1999. Adjustable telescoping whisker pole. Harken mainsheet system (track and cars) new in 1996. Harken genoa blocks. ABI quick-release lever for the staysail stay. ProFurl headsail furling system new in 2002 with new headstay.
Full-batten mainsail with two reefs by Carole Hasse new in 1998 and inspected by Hasse in 2002. New UK Lazycradle for the mainsail in 2003. 105% furling genoa with foam luff by Carole Hasse new in 2002. Hank-on staysail by Carole Hasse new in 1995, hardly used. Assymetrical cruising spinnaker with ATN sock and tacker by Carole Hasse new in 2001. Additional sail inventory includes an 80% jib and 120% genoa with hanks, both made by Carole Hasse in 1999. "Doado" is now powered by a 54HP Isuzu 4-cylinder diesel engine driving a Hurth HBW-250 transmission into a 1.25" monel shaft and a 22" automatic variable pitch Autoprop (added 2001). She was re-powered in 1999 at which time the exhaust system, fuel lines, shaft coupling and engine wiring were replaced, and the bilge areas cleaned and re-painted. She now cruises comfortably at 6.8kts, fast cruises at about 7kts, and will do 6kts into a gale at 2000rpm. This engine has a self-bleeding fuel system and dual RACOR filters, as well as a remote oil pumpout system. Total fuel capacity is 261 gallons in three tanks, giving a cruising range under power of about 1500 miles. Two main tanks are outboard port and starboard totaling 125 gallons out of fiberglass over black iron. These tanks have easily accessible cleanout ports, dip sticks and were thoroughly cleaned and fuel polished in 1996. There is also a metered 11-gallon aluminum day tank supplied from the main tanks by an electric fuel pump that allows one to operate under extreme conditions without getting air into the fuel system, and to fully withdraw fuel from the main tanks. This tank also supplies the diesel cabin heater.
Steering is a dual cable system by Edson, with independent cables for each steering station. The cables were replaced and all sheaves and bearings inspected and repacked in 2001. The autopilot ram on an independent arm creates additional steering redundancy. Custom emergency steering tiller system with access in the cockpit. The outside helm is a teak-spoked wheel with solid rim mounted on a bronze pedestal. Both the rim of the wheel and the top of the pedestal guard are wrapped with cord for a sure grip and a nautical appearance.
There are two automatic electric bilge pumps, one Rule 1500 plus a Flowjet Quad II. There are also two big Edson manual bilge pumps, one in the cockpit and one below decks.
"Dorado" is well equipped for both warm and cold climates. She has two AquaAir air conditioning/heat pump condenser units, 12,000BTU for the main salon and 9,000BTU for the master stateroom area. Heat is provided by a commercial-grade ProHeat XL-900 circulating hot water heating system with a 35,000BTU capacity operating on diesel fuel. This system is also plumbed into the domestic hot water tank.
The domestic hot water heater is a Force 10 six gallon size new in 2003. Water tankage totals 125 gallons including a 100 gallon stainless steel plus a 25 gallon "holding" tank, which has been set up to hold extra water. This tank could be converted to provide service as a legal holding tank. The pilothouse top has a filtered rainwater catchment system.
"Dorado" is a very heavily constructed vessel, which will appeal to the traditionally-minded sailor. This Hans Christian 39 Pilothouse in particular has enjoyed extraordinary ownership, and offers a very capable long-distance cruiser in tremendous cosmetic and functional condition.
